Question

Can my gaming PC run AI?

Probably. A graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM runs small models. 12 to 16 GB runs good everyday models. Check yours in Task Manager in about 2 minutes.

Short answer (as of Oct 14, 2026): Probably. A graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM runs small models. 12 to 16 GB runs good everyday models. Check yours in Task Manager in about 2 minutes.

Step one: find your graphics card memory

  1. On Windows, right-click the taskbar and open Task Manager.
  2. Click Performance, then GPU. The name at the top is your graphics card.
  3. Look for Dedicated GPU memory. That is the VRAM.

Step two: see what fits

VRAMExample NVIDIA 50 series cardsBiggest models that fit (our estimate)
8 GBRTX 5060 Ti 8 GBQwen2.5 VL 7B, Qwen3 8B, DeepSeek R1 0528 8B
12 GBRTX 5070Mistral Nemo 12B, Gemma 3 12B, Gemma 4 12B
16 GBRTX 5060 Ti 16 GB, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080Qwen3 14B, DeepSeek R1 Distill 14B, Phi-4
32 GBRTX 5090Qwen3 32B, Olmo 3.1 32B, OLMo 2 32B

Card memory comes from NVIDIA's own pages. Model fits use our RAM formula, which is a rough guide. Older cards with the same VRAM work too, just slower.

What if it does not fit?

If a model is bigger than your VRAM, LM Studio can split it between the card and normal RAM. It still runs. It just gets slow, like dial-up slow. A smaller model that fits the card is usually the better deal.

Common questions

Can my gaming PC run AI?

Probably. If your graphics card has 8 GB of VRAM, it can run small models. 12 to 16 GB runs good everyday models. 24 GB or more runs strong ones.

How do I check my VRAM on Windows?

Open Task Manager, click Performance, then GPU. Look for Dedicated GPU memory.

Do I need an NVIDIA card?

No. LM Studio also runs on other graphics cards and on Macs. A PC with only normal RAM works too, just slower.
